OVERVIEW

East Bay Tutoring is the premier science and mathematics tutoring and test prep company. Covering the East Bay, we specialize in private, in-home tutoring in biology, chemistry, physics, and math.

We take our job very seriously; we understand that when a parent or student chooses our services, they are placing part of the student's future in our hands. They are counting on us to provide them with a service that will give them an edge over their competition by helping them achieve the highest grades and test scores possible, and we don't take that responsibility lightly. Our students typically strive to get into the best undergraduate, graduate, and medical programs in the nation, and we keep this in mind in everything we do. OUR TUTORS

The highest quality of instruction requires the highest quality instructors, and we have them. All of our tutors have been actively recruited from UC Berkeley's graduate programs in chemistry, biology, physics, and mathematics. All of these graduate programs are ranked in the top 3 in the nation, which means that all of our tutors are amongst the best and brightest in the world, have taught undergraduate courses at Berkeley in their respective fields, won teaching awards, and know what it takes to be the best.

We understand that not everyone who is good at science is necessarily good at teaching, which is why we regard being personable, passionate about teaching and science, and having a great personality as equally important. In short, our tutors must be smart, cool, and a great role model.

After a thorough vetting process, our tutors spend hours learning how to use our teaching methods, observing senior tutors during real tutoring sessions, practicing the methods, and receiving feedback on their progress. Only when they have shown mastery of the skills they've been taught are they allowed to work with students.

In addition to the initial training, we are constantly improving East Bay Tutoring. Every 4-6 weeks we have a meeting to brainstorm and discuss ways of improving our methods and curricula. In essence, when a student works with one of our tutors, they are really working with an entire team of the best and brightest minds in the business. This is how we remain the premier math and science tutoring company.

OUR METHODS

There are superior ways to teach different subjects in math and science, and we are on the frontier of developing them. The basic teaching methods of East Bay Tutoring were developed by founder Joe Sweeney and have been improved upon over time as a result of our mission to always provide the best instruction available anywhere. This requires an understanding of how the brain works, careful observation, and trial and error to develop the optimal methods for teaching and the best designs for courses. And because every student learns in a slightly different way, our methods are flexible and can be tailored to each student.

At the core of our teaching methods is something we call Teach-Learn-Teach. We have discovered that this methodology is by far the fastest way to get students to understand complicated math and science material. Because this method is proprietary, we don't detail it on our website; however, we are happy to explain what it is and how it is used to each of our new clients.

Countless hours have been spent thinking about our interactions with students during tutoring sessions and our course design. We think about how to explain certain concepts. We think about what we write down on the paper. We think about how and where we write down things on the paper. We think about how to phrase things and what analogies to use, and we observe the student carefully to watch for cues that tell us if the material is being understood, in other words we even try to figure out what the student is thinking. Hopefully it's now obvious why our logo includes The Thinker!

Every 1-2 months we send out a newsletter called the "East Bay Edge" to all of our clients. Contained within are phenomenal articles about how to improve academic performance. These articles are based on scientific research and include topics like what to eat for breakfast to maximize your brain's ability to focus and retain information, how exercise improves your brain's function, and what times of day and how long you should study for during school. Because East Bay Tutoring's staff is comprised of the best and brightest science has to offer, it only makes sense that we actually seek out the latest scientific research on human performance and incorporate it into our model.
